Pileated Woodpecker And chicks 8x12
This image was taken while attending an Art show at Woodland Gardens in Courtenay in the spring of 2008. I was photographing a hummingbird nest with chicks when I saw this pair of woodpeckers making a nest. We came back every week for five weeks and eventually got this image. This is the male...you can tell by the red cheek patch. The females don't have one. There are three young in this nest (count the beaks). It takes about fifteen seconds to feed them and then the adult is gone for another hour.
