This image was taken in the spring of 2006. We were set up high in a blind about 60 yards from a large Heron Rookery. I shot this with a very large 1200 mm lens. This pair had two young in the nest. The male would go out to gather food and when he came back they would sometimes go through a elaborate courting ritual where they would puff out their feathers and raise the crest on their heads and then they would strut around the nest for a bit. None of the other Herons seemed to do this. As you can see their necks and bills almost form a heart shape. A Chinese Lady upon viewing this print commented that perhaps their love was slightly out of balance.
