Feeding Time 8x12
This image was taken on Vancouver Island in the spring of 2006. The mating pair would take turns sitting on the nest and hunting for fish to feed the young birds. Originally there were two young in this nest. One died unfortunately although that is not unusual. When the adults feed they just offer the food. They make no effort to ensure that all young are fed equally or even that they are fed at all for that matter. This young bird was very aggressive and made sure he got most of the food. Finally the second bird couldn't compete and just got pushed down deep in the nest. We watched the adult dig it out after about two weeks. After about six weeks the adults just start bringing the fish and then leave the young to feed himself.
